EDITORIAL SERVICES
Am I the right editor for you?
Finding an editor who not only understands the importance of sentence structure and how that can affect your story, but also understands your goals for your project, as well as 'gets' your voice, is like sifting for gold. However, finding that connection between writer and editor is just as important to me, also. Because finding an editor who understands your vision ensures the heart and soul of that editor being applied into the efforts they put into your novel. This is how I want to feel about the projects I'm helping to mould.
Due to my need for this connection, it's imperative to me, as your editor, to be certain we'll be able to work as a team, and teamwork needs to come from both parties. So, all editing requests will require careful consideration to determine if I am the right editor for you.
Disclaimer: J.B. Editing does not promise their services will lead to agent representation, publishing contract, or bestseller status for the work submitted. We will, however, endeavour to provide quality edits.
What services can I offer?
I have services available to suit all editing needs for works of fiction. Please see below for the complete range. Each have a description of what will be provided to enable to you assess which will suit your requirements.
Line Edits: Line edits are the most extensive edits. These are the edits that will truly polish your story to a high shine, and include full novel makeover, which will help improve sentence structure, eliminate over-writing and unnecessary word insertions or descriptions, pick up on inconsistencies and contradictions, and offers punctuation and grammar corrections, as well as correction of typos, etc.
From start to finish, line edits can require anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks* dependent upon level of work required and word count. Please remember to allow addition time pre-edits for a read-through if story edits have been requested also (see 'How Do I Work?' under 'For line edits' before for clarification on what this entails).
Proofread: A proofread is a final read-through of your manuscript before it goes to print, or before you're ready to submit it to publishers/agents. These edits include correction of incorrect grammar or punctuation and typos.
A proofread of a novel/story generally takes approximately 2 weeks; however, dependent upon length and level of edits required, please allow up to 4 weeks*.
Story edits: Story edits are feedback provided after reading your manuscript, advice on the work's strength(s) and weakness(es), characterisation, inconsistencies, and, where possible, advice on how to help mould it into something amazing and guidance on its 'missing elements'.
To allow for a thorough read-through of the work, as well as consideration time for compiling feedback, plus the time to collate the feedback into a document, story edits require from 2 to 6 weeks*, dependent upon word count and level of feedback collated.
*If work will take longer than the specified times due to my current workload, this will be made clear upon contact. If, however, the work will take longer than the specified times due to the depth of the work required being more than initially anticipated, immediate contact will be made to inform you of a new completion date.
How do I work?
How I work very much depends on the level of edits your work requires*.
For line edits and proofreads, Track Changes will be used. Anyone not familiar with Track Changes can find tutorials online. Track Changes allows edits made by me to be displayed clearly, as well as allows any additional comments we need to make to be displayed to the side with minimal interference to the work itself. Track Changes also allows simple acceptance or rejection of the edits with minimal effort.
For line edits, a complete read-through of the manuscript prior to edits is requisite if story edits have been requested also. This way, should we come across any edits/inconsistencies/confusions/etc that we feel require the attention of the author to edit rather than ourselves, they can then be addressed by YOU, prior to the line edits. This allows you to maintain control of any major alterations, and the bigger issues are already completed when the edits begin, thus allowing a smoother and, hopefully, swifter editing process. So, if requesting line edits and story edits, please ensure you allow for this in your time-frame for projected publication/submission . Otherwise, only the writing of the story will be polished, as opposed to the actual story itself.
For story edits, any feedback will be written up in the Word document, pinpointing any raised issues, with clear indication of where these issues can be located (provided they are not a novel-length concern consistent throughout).
*this is subject to change on a case-by-case basis, just as acceptance of an editing submission is made on a case-by-case basis.
